Back to School – New Year, New Start
Every September, it’s the same feelings of excitement, thrill and high hopes for success and growth. The biggest dread seems to be the daily task of making lunches. We have all heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but we need to keep that fuel intake going with a wholesome, healthy lunch that is quick and easy. Homemade meals are the best, as we have more control over the sugars, fats, and salt that encompasses our meal. Homemade does not mean that you have to spend hours in the kitchen everyday either.
A salad or sandwich does not take long to put together but, it becomes old quick when you are eating the same thing every day. Alternatives to the everyday do not have to be drastic, try a different dressing on your salad or switch up the topping on a garden salad to berries and nuts with goat or feta cheese. Different flavours and textures will heighten senses and satisfy cravings. Instead of a sandwich, how about a wrap. There are endless, simple and delicious combinations that can be wrapped up into a well rounded lunch. Try a classic BLT or make up an easy tuna salad with fresh or dried herbs mixed in, topped off with fresh baby spinach.
Maybe it is not so much the main star of lunch that is giving you the problem, maybe it is what goes along with the sandwich that you are tired of. Instead of the whole apple in your lunch, why not make your own fruit cups. Cut up your fruit after you bring it home from the grocery store, any combination you like, put it in individual BPA free cups and place them in the freezer. Not only do you have a healthy snack without the added sugar, but it also works as a cooler pack to keep the rest of your lunch cold. Trail mix is another healthy, easy, crowd pleasing snack. Again, there are countless options and combinations of ingredients that will keep it healthy and interesting. Try your own combination of seeds (hemp, sunflower, or pumpkin etc.), dried fruit (cranberries, blueberries, pineapple, strawberries etc.), grains (air popped popcorn, pretzels, whole grain cereals etc.), sweets (cacao nibs, yogurt covered raisins, dark chocolate pieces etc.), and savory (wasabi peas, spices like cayenne pepper or cinnamon etc.) together to create a trail mix that provides vital vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants, protein and fats.
It’s these simple, slight changes to the everyday that won’t make it feel like the everyday. It will give you the energy to succeed and grow and allow that excitement to continue throughout the rest of the year. When you eat well you feel well, when you feel well the possibilities are endless.
